According to the American Health Association more than 75 million Americans have been diagnosed with high blood pressure (hypertension). The risks involved with this disease is fatal and worst of all, it's unpredictable. Various studies have proven that olive oil naturally decreases high blood pressure and it's one of the most effective ways to keep it under control.
A specific study conducted in Naples, Italy, proved that virgin olive oil dramatically improved the condition of all the participants in the olive oil diet. 23 men and 23 women who suffered from hypertension were used for the study and they were divided into two groups. The first group was told to add olive oil to their meals after it was cooked while the other group was asked to use sunflower oil. A daily dosage of 4 spoonfuls for the men and 3 spoonfuls for the woman was set as a guideline. After six months the olive oil group had a drastic drop in blood pressure. The average measurements before the study were 134 mm HG for systolic and 90 mm HG for diastolic pressure. After six months the average measurements were 127 mm HG systolic and 84 mm HG diastolic. Those who used sunflower oil showed no significant change. (Journal in the Archives of Internal Medicine)
In terms of medication, the olive oil group was either able to reduce their amount of medication with 48% or stop medication completely. The researchers believe that the polyphenols, which is relatively high in olive oil, plays a determining factor in reducing high blood pressure although this is only speculation. For those who used sunflower oil nobody was able to stop with their medication, and some of them were only able to reduce their medication with 4%.
Scientists also believe that the intake of unsaturated fats, such as olive oil in combination with leafy greens and vegetables, form what is called Nitro fatty acids. Nitro fatty acids retain an enzyme called soluble epoxide hydrolase which in turn regulates blood pressure. These findings were published in a journal which can be found in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. Unfortunately nobody has been able to pinpoint what exactly makes olive oil so effective.
It is recommended to consume a daily dose of olive oil every day, at least 2 spoonfuls. In one of the latest studies done by the American Journal of Clinical Studies, the researchers speculated that there are more than just one healing element in olive oil and that it can work in multiple ways.
